Pier & Beam’s September Happy Hour takes us to Midtown on Thursday, September 17, for an evening at 13 Celsius, a longtime Houston wine bar that found its home in an unlikely historic building.
Built in 1926 as the Jennings Cleaning & Dyeing Shop, the building served as a neighborhood cleaners for nearly eight decades. When the team behind 13 Celsius took over the aging structure, they chose to work with what was already there rather than start over. They retained its original pressed-tin ceiling and even turned an area where part of the roof had collapsed into an open-air courtyard.
13 Celsius opened on New Year’s Eve 2006, taking its name from the ideal temperature for storing wine. Its European-inspired interior pairs the building’s surviving historic features with a 40-foot white marble bar and furnishings salvaged from Houston’s former Warwick Hotel (now Hotel ZaZa in the Museum District). The project received a 2008 Preservation Houston Good Brick Award for the renovation and adaptive reuse of the historic building.
